Diversionary Teen Court program puts first-time offenders in front of a jury of their peers
Youth courts train teenagers to handle real-life cases involving their peers, offering a restorative response to misbehavior. Youth courts use positive peer pressure to ensure that young people who have committed minor offenses pay back the community and receive the help they need to avoid further involvement in the justice system. Youth courts hear a range of low-level crimes; many handle cases that would otherwise wind up in Family Court or Criminal Court. The Center also assists local jurisdictions in their efforts to establish youth courts. Harlem Youth Court members learn how to use a sling shot during their annual team-building retreat.
We support Youth or Teen Courts throughout the state of Tennessee with funding, training of both adult and youth volunteers, educational events, technical assistance, site visits and data collection. Teenagers who volunteer to sit on the Youth Court decide the sentence for other teens who admitted to committing an offense. These teen volunteers base their sentence on the principles of Restorative Justice. Youth court programs would not be successful without the hundreds of volunteers - mostly lawyers - who act as mentors and advisors to youth court programs and the teens who volunteer their time and wisdom to act as members of the courts.
